The Tortoise and The Hare Story

Life, Personal Development No Comments »

Once upon a time, a tortoise and a hare had an argument on who is the fastest runner. They agreed on a route to start a race to settle on the disagreement.

And as you all know, the tortoise won the race.

Let’s refresh a little, shall we?

The hare was far ahead of the tortoise and figured out that he take some time to relax under a tree before continuing the race. The hare fell asleep.

The tortoise moved on, overtook him and soon finished the race and emerged as the champ! The hare woke up and realized that he had lost the race.

This is the version of the story we all grown up with, slow and steady wins the race.

The story continues…

Part 2 :

The hare was disappointed and he did some soul-searching and realized he was overconfident and careless. If he had not taken things for granted, there’s no way the tortoise could have beaten him.

So he is taking a revenge and challenged the tortoise to another race. The tortoise agreed.

This time, the hare went all out, not giving any chances to his opponent and ran without stopping from start to finish. He won by several miles.

The moral of the story is – Fast and Consistent will always beat the Slow and Steady. In any organization, one is slow and reliable person and the other is fast and also reliable, the latter will consistently climb the organization ladder faster than the slow chap. It’s good to be slow and steady, but it’s better to be fast and reliable.

But the story doesn’t end here…

Part 3 :

The tortoise did some thinking this time, asking himself “How can I win the hare?” and he was aware that there’s no way he can beat the hare in a race the way it was currently formatted.

The tortoise thought for a while and challenged the hare for another race, but on a different route and the hare agreed, with full of confidence.

So off they went! The hare, still hold on to his commitment to be consistently fast,  ran at top speed until he came to a broad river. He stopped. The finishing line is a couple of kilometers on the other side of the river. He was wondering what to do.

The tortoise came along, got into the river and swam across. He continued walking and finished the race.

The moral of the story – First identify your core competency and then change the playing field to suit your core competency. Working on your strengths will create opportunities for growth and advancement.

Please hold on, The story still hasn’t ended…

Part 4 :

The hare and the tortoise, by this time had become good friends and they did some thinking together. The last race could have been run much better.

So they decided to do the last race again, but to run as a team this time and break the fastest time record. They help each other.

They started off, and this time the hare carried the tortoise till the riverbank.

There, the tortoise took over and swam across with the hare on his back.

On the opposite bank, the hare again carried the tortoise and they reached the finishing line together.

They both felt a greater sense of satisfaction than they had felt earlier.

The moral of the story – It’s good to be individually brilliant and to have strong core competencies. But unless you’re able to work as a team and harness each others core competencies, you’ll always perform below par because there will always be situations at which you’ll do poorly and someone else does well.

Teamwork is mainly about situational leadership letting the person with the relevant core competency for a situation take leadership.

Other lessons to be learnt :

Note that both the hare and the tortoise never give up after failures. The hare decided to work harder and put in extra effort after his failure. The tortoise changed his strategy because he was already working as hard as he could.

In life, when faced with failure, sometimes it is appropriate to work harder and put in more effort. Sometimes it is appropriate to change strategy and try something different. And sometimes it is appropriate to do both.

The hare and the tortoise also learnt another vital lesson. When we stop competing against a rival and instead start competing against the situation, we perform far better.

Everyone have their own strengths and weaknesses. Let’s combine and perform as a team.

My strengths may be your weaknesses, But your strengths may be my weaknesses.

Look at the Positive Side

Life, People, Personal Development No Comments »

We had a workshop recently. One of the activities is to write about others. Each of us were given a big piece of paper to be placed at the back of us and we were are given a marker pen to write about the good points of our office friends.

The photo above shows all about the lady. She is "peramah" (Talkative or Approachable), Hardworking, Helpful, Good Leader, Teamwork, a Thoughtful Person, etc.

After about 20 minutes of music and the fun going around writing on as much as possible about our office staff, it's time to get back to our seats and look at what our friends wrote about us.

How does these words make you feel? These words really make you feel good.

Whether you know it or not, these positive words either make you realize about the good things that you possessed or make you change the way you look at others. (that is to look at others in a positive way – Look at the good side)

Diary 2010

Life, Personal Development 1 Comment »

Today, almost the end of January 2010, I just bought myself a diary. I haven't plan anything for this year. Perhaps, I was too busy doing something else and didn't locate time for myself. Perhaps, I'm making an excuse for myself. Some may also say that I might not even make my new year's resolutions. I actually have them in my mind, but I haven't put it down on paper.

Anyone who also has something to change in their life and its a new year 2010 and new year brings new commitment, something one wants to change to be better than the year before. Anyone can get out of their normal routine and improve at any time one likes. It doesn't have to be a new year to start a new lifestyle.

Now, I'm putting them down on paper, not any piece of paper, it has to be reviewed everyday, the moment I wake up in the morning and at night, before going to bed. I choose a Diary to put down my goals and resolutions for the year.

After work today and it is Saturday, I just pop into Popular Bookstore and this is the only type of diary left in the shelves. The good diary or the better one are all sold out! Not to waste anymore time, I just grasp it and move to the counter. It's a simple looking Diary, not too big, just nice and it's only RM7.95

There is one saying, " People Don't Plan To Fail, But They Fail To Plan."

Bata

Personal Development No Comments »

When someone mentioned the word "Bata", the first thing that comes to our mind is, it is a shoe! A well known shoe Brand.

Here is a story my dad used to tell during his MLM presentation. This is how is goes…

Once upon a time, there was this Manager of a Shoe Factory asking 2 guys to go to Africa to sell shoes. All costs of the trip and accomodations will be paid, so off they go for two days to Africa.

The first guy came back, and told the boss " African don't wear shoes!!!". Boss, "we can't sell shoes to them

because they don't wear shoes."

The second guy came back and told the boss "African don't wear shoes!!!", Boss "quickly sent a trailer of shoes over there

because they don't wear shoes."

Same situation but 2 different outcome from both guys.

Today, the people in Africa wear shoes, all kinds, like Nike, Reebok, etc…

The first guy was looking at the negative side of things and the second guy was looking at it, on the positive side.

Concept of a Self-Builder in a Nutshell

Personal Development No Comments »

All men stands equal until someone realizes the unlimited wealth within himself called HUMAN POTENTIAL. His realization soon leads to the understanding that HE MUST STRUGGLE HARD to bring out that POTENTIAL and a SELF-BUILDER is born :

* He takes charge of his own life and accepts personal responsibility to bring himself up the ladder of society in order that he may one day SERVE HUMANITY as a LEADER.

* He learns by Observations and LEADS by Example.

+++ A SELF-BUILDER IS A LEADER OF LEADERS +++

Mr.Security, Mr.Recognition & Mr.Achiever

People, Personal Development No Comments »

Let’s talk about people.

When it comes to this topic, most of us call it gossiping. Its a norm. Nevertheless, it is important to know too.

You know your friends very well. No doubt about it. Before doing your presentation to your friend / prospect or sometimes, while you are doing your presentation to share your MLM business, you will notice very clearly the type of person you are talking to by the way they present themselves, their responses.

MLM people will be able to notice whether their prospect can be named as Mr. Security, Mr.Recognition or Mr. Achiever or combination of some of those personalities.

You can observe from the way they speak, the lifestyle they lead and their perception about business.

Let’s see a few of the characteristic of :

Mr. Security

– scare of losing their job, feeling of contentment, loyal to their job, in a comfort zone, not used to doing business, never try any venture, give up early and never want to try anymore, hold on tight to their job, work in the office is their priority, don’t want any headache, heartache to manage business, etc…

Mr. Recognition

– want to be well known by many people, want to be famous, glamourous, status is important (can see from name in their call cards), no financial gain is alright for these guys as long as they got the name, they want to be the center of attraction, etc…

Mr. Achiever

– they have goals to strive, if they are not known to many, it doesn’t matter at all, focus and self-driven, dare to take calculated risk, taking chances, look for opportunities and act, etc

Nothing is good or bad about these people. They are who they are. You and I can’t change that. It will be insane.

But, one thing is for sure, people can improve.

They are Mr.Security and after a few years, you are surprised to know that they have become Mr. Achiever.

Source : I got this information from my dad. Hopefully, I deliver it well to you all.

Action

Personal Development No Comments »

Action is as essential to success in life as flour is a component part of breadmaking.

Without action, there can be no successes. Once we have determined the goal, formulated a workable plan for its attainment, and resolved, with a firm determination, to achieve the object of our heart's desire, we must act at once.

We must embark upon the journey and follow the plan. We must put our best foot forward at once. Purpose must be followed by action.

Activity is the law of all growth.

We can never hope to take out of life more than we put in to it.
