I always remind myself not to be surprised if I happen to meet with friends, relatives and neighbours who shows their enthusiasm to talk to me about MLM.

Don’t be surprise if someone whom you know very well, come to see you on MLM business too. I personally have seen many of this situation happened. My neighbour just started her MLM journey. My relative consumed a MLM product and tried to sell to me. Hey, I bought the product! My ex-collegue who has just retired join a MLM company and came to the office to see us. All this scenarios gave me more encouragement to see more people and share about my MLM business.

Don’t be surprise, if your son came back from his studies and became a member of a MLM company. This may happen.

I believe in both, since we are living in an Information Age, the Internet has become a necessity to each of us.

There are MLM online and MLM offline, but most of the results come from 95% offline and 5% online, because I think it takes eye to eye and belly to belly to make it work effectively. I think we need to see our downlines personally. I feel that we need to give them the confidence that we are there whenever they need our help.

MLM is about human touch, it is a People Business.

I tried to see how MLM is going to work 100% online. Perhaps, I have not discover it yet. Or may be it takes much longer to make it work online than offline.

This is one of the most important question that you must ask someone who joined a MLM business or someone you are trying to recruit.

Why they join MLM? Why they decided to do MLM? What are they looking for?

You won’t be able to answer for them. You only have to listen to their real reasons. There are many reasons. You will heard different answer from different people.

They are looking beyond where they are now and trying to do something with their life. In fact, they know what MLM can do because they have seen many became successful from venturing into MLM business. Perhaps, one of the reason you will hear, is that MLM can bring them the Unlimited income potential.

Do you choose the MLM company? or the MLM company chooses you?

Some people are attracted to some benefits that the MLM company offer. Nobody join a wrong MLM company. If you just sign up in a MLM company, its alright. There are so many MLM companies in the market and choosing one can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for in a MLM company. It is true, that you have seen many people achieve great success in “A company”. You also have seen many successful people in “B company”.

Here are some of the important aspects you should look at, while making your choices. a) Company’s profile and background, b) Product, c) Marketing Plan. Choose a company that has been in operation for several years. Some company don’t last.

Some company’s marketing plan is easier than the other. Some are not long term program.

There is a saying that goes “He who has a why to live, can bear almost any how”.

If one really know the reason of doing MLM, than he/she will be staying long enough in this industry. The reason I am saying this is because, many people give up too soon and I felt the same way too.
But after I had gone through a deeper understanding about MLM, I am able to see a much clearer picture.

My reason for doing MLM is to achieve F.I.P.F. which stands for Financial Independence and Personal Freedom. It is not all about the money we are chasing for, in MLM business. What are we looking for besides money? Later, we will look at other areas, such as the benefits and features of a MLM business.

I tried to recall some of those MLM companies that my father had ventured into when I was young.

Cosway was one of them. I am sure you know Cosway, a member of Berjaya Group.

But I did ask him more about his adventures.

It all happens during the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Shaklee in 1987.

Beaver Health Care, year 1987, from the US.

Slimax, year 1987, dealing with Health Products from Singapore by Dr. Yeolan Lim.

Another MLM company, Let's Go Sdn Bhd, in year 1989, also from Singapore.

Magnacasa, year 1988.

L'arome International, year 1989.

Matol in 1990.

NSSP (Nature's Sunshine Products) in 1990.

Synergy in 1990s.

What MLM companies have you heard of those days, in the year 1970s?
Let me share with you a little story.

Early 1977, Mr. Billi Lim, a University Graduate, with 40 classmates started Fortiss Sdn Bhd, and got into MLM, although he doesn’t know much about running one. You know about Billi Lim, the Dare To Fail guy. He dare to try anything. Fortiss Sdn Bhd lasted for 4 years, with 7 classmates remaining with him. Fortiss Bhd still in operation, but not in MLM way. They tried to venture into Housing, Banking, Management Services and others. They might have branch out to many, instead of focusing on MLM.

Next comes, Malaysia’s Giant, MegaWang, with a factory of their own. It is very big company. MegaWang’s Managing Director, Mr. LT Lim was an Amway DD (Amway DD is the First Title in Amway). Whenever there are MegaWang’s meeting, they will hear rumours of a bomb in the meeting hall.

Mr. LT Lim then started HomeShoppers. He doesn’t have enough money and ask distributors’ help for funding to start MLM. He became a Real Estate Agent.

From being Nutrilite distributors, Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel, then created a multi-level marketing plan and from a basement in 1959, Amway was formed.

Amway’s first product was (L.O.C), Liquid Organic Cleaner. After Amway was investigated by the authorities and they have decided that Multi-Level Marketing was legitimate, many other companies are venturing into MLM. Lots of people are trying to copy Amway Plan.

Other MLM terms you may heard of, are Network Marketing, Referral Marketing, Network Distribution, etc. They are similar only sounds differently. Amway come to Malaysia in July 1975.

The word "Direct Selling" is very commonly used when it comes to MLM. 

Many have define MLM to be also known as Direct Selling, mainly because their first encounter with these salesperson knocking from door to door to sell something.

This is understandable because most reputable MLM companies belong to the Direct Selling Association (DSA).

Many still call them "Direct Selling" until today, eventhough the method of marketing is different.

Another common misunderstanding about MLM is that you have to sell retail to be successful. MLM is not all about selling, its about building organizations.

MLM is not defined as a door to door service.

MLM started in 1931, during the debt of depression in the US.

The MLM company at that time was, Stanley Home Products. It is known for its cleaning products, Kitchen cleaner,Furniture cleaner, for household and personal care. Stanley Home Products came to Malaysia but doesn’t take off the ground. But they still exist until today.

The most popular MLM company was Nutrilite by Dr. Carl F.Rehnborg and son, Sam Rehnborg. Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel joined Nutrilite as distributors. They built a huge organization in Nutrilite.
